Infocenter / What is Whirling? / Page 1 of 4
Overview
Whirling is a manufacturing operation in which "a geometrically oriented cut removes chips". By reason of the type of tool and cutting speeds, it is classified as a specialized type of milling. The difference is that when cutting external threads, the cutters face not outwards but inwards. So this type of whirling can be called "internal milling".
